Design Story – Nacre Jewel Box

Chaehwa-chilgi is a traditional Korean chilgi art differentiated from Najeon-chilgi for its colourful and elaborate designs.  This tradition goes back to Three Kingdoms period over 2000 years ago. Chaehaw-chilgi uses various natural pigmentations and special methods: ta-chal-beob(smashing and sticking technique), kkun-eum-jil(cutting off and attaching in a row technique), to create beautiful handcrafted works. Mizi Company is proud to be able to bring this 2000 years of art tradition into our handmade products, adding modern twists to create unique works of arts.

What happens when you order?

On the wooden jewel box, contemporary nacre artist N.Y.Cho draws the cherry blossoms with lacquer paints, then puts selected mother-of-pearl pieces one by one by hand.  When the pieces are fixed on the box, she coats transparent special liquid several times to add deep bright shine so that you can feel the real oriental beauty from it.
